A SWAT standoff that lasted nearly seven hours in Cache County came to a peaceful end Thursday evening.

Cache County Sheriff's Department SWAT unit was dispatched to the northern Utah town of Providence on Thursday just before 1 p.m. after officials said they were alerted by a woman that her son was armed and wanted to hurt himself.

Neighbors told officers that they had heard shots fired, and when officers arrived, the man had barricaded himself inside his parents' home.

Authorities evacuated eight homes nearby as a precaution and surrounded the home, located near 100 East and 100 South. Officials said they kept constant communication with the man until about 4 p.m., when all communication ceased.

Worried that he had harmed himself, the SWAT team sent a robot into the home with a communication device, but the man could not be located.

Eventually, they dropped tear gas into the home, the team went in and found the man sitting in a hallway. He was taken into custody without incident and was taken to Logan Regional Hospital for evaluation.

Authorities said the man was under the influence at the time, but it was unclear whether it was alcohol or drugs. The man may face criminal charges.
