Provo police have arrested a man they say heavily damaged a cinder block wall at a liquor store, drove into the backyard of a nearby home, hit a tree, sped off and then crashed into the closed garage door of his own residence before being taken into custody.

Provo police Sgt. Brandon Post said Tuesday that the 42-year-old driver was booked into Utah County jail on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident.

The incidents occurred Monday when the suspect first rammed his SUV into a retaining wall in the parking lot of the State Liquor Store at 166 S. Freedom Boulevard. Police arrived at the scene and found striation marks from the damaged vehicle on the roadway surface, a trail they followed to a home near 400 North and 1000 West, where the vehicle had gone over the curb and a sidewalk, into the back yard, hit a tree and then exited the property through the front yard, driving over a rose bush in the process.

"Officers then spoke to some construction workers ... who witnessed the suspect's vehicle traveling west on Center Street. Officers drove through the area and found more striation marks in the road which led them to the suspect's home in the area of 400 South and 1800 West. There they found the suspect vehicle sticking out of the garage," Post said.

The driver was found still inside the vehicle. After receiving medical attention for minor injuries, he was arrested without further incident.
