Redford: Democrats need to learn 'storytelling'

Robert Redford thinks the Democratic Party needs to take a page from Hollywood, and learn to be better storytellers.

Politico quotes an interview Redford and his son Jamie gave to Outside magazine for its July issue (an interview that is, alas, unavailable online), in which they discuss their championing of environmental issues. In the interview, the elder Redford talks about why the environmental debate has become one-sided in today's politics.

"It's about storytelling," Redford told Outside's Abe Streep. "The Democratic Party has a good story to tell, but they don't know how to tell it. And the other side has no story to tell and they tell it loud and clear. People listen to the loud barking dog more than the mewing cat."

As the interview ended, Redford also sounds off on what he calls an advantage to the current Republican hard-line stance on issues: "At least people who have any sense at all can see, 'This is what we're getting? This is what we're going to get if we elect somebody from that mob? Whoa—'"
