Keane

Spotlight show • When British piano-driven pop-rock band Keane met producer Dan Grech-Marguerat, he told them he was a big fan. But the next thing he told them, according to keyboardist Tim Rice-Oxley, was that he hated their most recent album, 2008's "Perfect Symmetry." So when Grech-Marguerat helmed Keane's newest album, this year's "Strangeland," he told the musicians to stay away from the guitar explorations of "Perfect Symmetry." Instead, he wanted them to focus on the basics of what made them popular: emotional and beautifully arranged songs that ached and soothed. "Think about what makes you fall in love with pop songs" was essentially Rice-Oxley's mantra during the writing and recording process. "That's what makes being in a band wonderful," he said. Kiev opens.

Jimmy Cliff

Spotlight show • Reggae and punk music come from the same worldview, so it should come as no surprise that 64-year-old reggae legend Jimmy Cliff has been working with Rancid's Tim Armstrong on Cliff's new album, "Rebirth," due out in July. "He's a very honest person," said Cliff in a phone interview about Armstrong, to whom he was introduced by the late Joe Strummer of The Clash. "He expresses the same kind of sentiments we express in reggae music, about injustice." Last year, the Armstrong-produced Cliff EP called "Sacred Fire" was released, and the creative relationship was so fruitful that Cliff said "we just made it flow" on the new album. "Rebirth" contains original songs as well as a Rancid cover ("Ruby Soho") and a song by The Clash ("The Guns of Brixton"). Cliff said the new album represents a new chapter in his life. But not the last chapter. Trevor Hall opens.

Tycho

Spotlight show • Scott Hansen is known as ISO50 for his photographic and design works, but when it comes time to create and perform music, he's known as Tycho. Music came late to the San Franciscan, he said in a phone interview. "I don't come from a musical family," he said. "Drawing was my outlet." But when he was 21, he procured a drum machine and synthesizer and began fashioning ambient, layered techno music that explores and unfolds rather than hitting listeners with a sledgehammer. As you might expect, visuals at a Tycho show are much more considered than the average band's set design. "I've never seen the difference between the two," he said of visuals and audio. "It brings another dimension to a live experience." Tycho hasn't performed in Utah before, but many Utahns count themselves as fans to his rock-star status in the graphic-design scene. "If you're into [my] design, you'll be into the music," Tyhco said. "Music is a more pure expression of the vision. I don't have the visual talent to put emotion [into visuals]."
