Utah weather conditions perfect for 'explosive fire growth'

Gusty winds, hot temperatures and low humidity combined with very dry vegetation are creating the perfect combination for "explosive fire growth" Tuesday, according to the Salt Lake City National Weather Service.

A red flag warning was issued Tuesday through 9 p.m. by the National Weather Service for the western two thirds of Utah. Authorities ask that people in those areas avoid any activities that could spark a fire.

The weather is expected to continue to be hot and dry throughout most of the state through the holiday. It is expected to reach 95 degrees in most of northern Utah on Tuesday. With a high of 93 degrees expected Wednesday, little relief from the heat is expected for Fourth of July celebrations.

In southern Utah, highs are expected to reach 100 degrees Tuesday. A high of 94 degrees is expected in St. George on Wednesday and 99 degrees is forecasted for Moab, with a slight chance of thunderstorms possible.

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality rated Tuesday as a "red" air day, signifying that the air quality is unsafe for sensitive groups, such as older adults and children, and people with asthma. A "green" air day is expected for Wednesday, however.
