A volunteer firefighter from Elk Ridge will spend Independence Day in jail on suspicion of arson.

The 18-year-old was booked into the Utah County Jail on Tuesday on three arson counts stemming from a series of fires in Loafer Canyon, said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, Utah County sheriff's spokesman.

Spencer said six fires were set in the canyon, which lies between the southern Utah County communities of Elk Ridge and Woodland Hills, between June 25 and July 2.

He said the fires were small and quickly put out by firefighters.

Cannon did not know what clues led to the man's arrest, but he said investigators determined the fires were started by someone who had firefighting knowledge. He said the teen may not have acted alone.

A bail hearing is scheduled for Thursday in 4th District Court.
