Rodeo: Bennett wins bareback at Vernal

Caleb Bennett took another step toward qualifying for his first-ever National Finals Rodeo by winning the bareback event at the $141,000 Dinosaur Roundup in Vernal, which concluded Saturday night. Bennett, who is from Morgan, Utah, earned $3,798 with his victory. He is currently ninth in the season standings. The top 15 competitors in each event qualify for the National Finals in December. Bennett, 23, finished 35th in the world last year with earnings of $26,199. He has already made $38,945 in 2012. In other events, Alex Wright of Milford, Utah, won in saddle bronc, Nick Guy of Sparta, Wis., and K.C. Jones of Burlington, Wyo., tied in the steer wrestling, Josh Peek of Pueblo, Colo., and Monty Lewis of Hereford, Texas, tied in the tie-down roping, Sabrina Ketcham of Yeso, N.M., prevailed in barrel racing and Seth Glause of Rock Springs, Wyo., won the bull riding. Also, Luke Brown of Rock Hill, S.C., and Martin Lucero of Stephenville, Texas, tied for first place with Derrick Begay of Seba Dalkai, Ariz., and Cesar de la Criz of Tucson in the team roping.
