A 44-year-old man was wounded by a gunshot following an argument with two people — one of them his former girlfriend — after he was invited into their apartment near 1880 West 3900 South West Valley on Sunday night.

At about 7 p.m., the victim, Dell Archuleta, got into a verbal argument with the former girlfriend and a man who was at the apartment. The man pulled out a handgun and shot Archuleta in the abdomen, according to a press release from the West Valley City police Det. Mike Powell.

Archuleta stumbled outside onto the grass and remained there until paramedics arrived. Several calls had been made to 911 reporting the gun shots.

Archuleta and the woman had been involved in a relationship previously, which ended with a protective order being issued against Archuleta for alleged domestic violence, Powell said.

The 28-year-old alleged shooter and the 25-year-old former girlfriend remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.

The man was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on charges of attempted homicide, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a restricted person. Archuleta remained at a local area hospital in stable condition on Monday.

Investigators said Monday they were still working out specifics of the incident.
