A couple of weeks ago, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker told Mark Alvarez that he need not apply for a second three-year term on the Salt Lake City Library Board ("Library staff upset as Becker dumps a key ally," Tribune, June 29).
Last week, Gov. Gary Herbert asked Peter Metcalf, head of Holladay-based Black Diamond Equipment, to resign from the state's Ski and Snowboard Industry Working Group ("Outdoor industry leader quits Utah governor's group," Tribune, July 17).
The obvious reason for both actions is that neither the mayor nor the governor want anything but puppet boards to pat them on their heads. When there is no room for dissent, there is no reason for a board.
