Washington City man in critical condition after shootout with police

A routine traffic stop turned into a shoot out in a small southern Utah town Friday, leaving the suspect in critical condition.

Police say the 36-year-old Washington City man did not comply with officers' commands and fired shots at them; police returned fire. The suspect remained in critical condition on Saturday.

At 3:20 p.m., Washington City police tried to stop Jamon Val Cranney, who was driving a car south near 200 South and Washington Fields Road (300 East), spokesman Ed Kantor said in a news release.

When Cranney kept driving, police terminated their search for the safety of the public and asked other officers to attempt to locate him. An officer later spotted him near 3650 South Washington Fields Road.

At 4 p.m., when police tried to stop Cranney again, he fired "several shots at the officers," according to police. Officers returned gunfire, hitting Cranney, who was flown to Dixie Regional Medical Center.

No police officers or other individuals were injured.

The Washington County Attorney's Office Critical Incident Investigation Team is investigating the shooting.
