Brush fire burns two acres near Tanner Park

A brief blaze charred about two acres at Tanner Park near the mouth of Parleys Canyon on Saturday afternoon.

Fire crews from Salt Lake City Fire and Unified Fire agency sent about 35 firefighters and eight engine companies to battle the brush fire near I-215 and I-80.

The blaze started at 2695 E. Heritage Way (2760 South) at Tanner Park at about 2:20 p.m. United Fire Authority Capt. Lee Ascarte said crews had the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

"We were fortunate today because we didn't have high winds," Ascarte said.

He said the fire started adjacent to a hiking trailhead about 30 feet south of I-80.

Salt Lake City Fire spokesman Jason Asay said the "heavy brush fire" was classified as only a one-alarm fire.

Asay said a few homes on 2700 East were threatened but suffered no damage. Homeowners used their own hoses to water down their yards as a precaution.

Because power lines and an electrical substation east of Tanner Park were also threatened by the fire, Asay said, representatives from Rocky Mountain Power were called to the scene.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
