Throughout the month of August, Tribune writers will taste our way through some of Utah's finest frozen confections including ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt and shave ice in order to beat the heat and satisfy a sugar rush. Today's pick:

Shane's Chocolate Chip Swirl • Generous scoops of chocolate-chip ice cream on top of chocolate ice cream, slathered with chocolate whipped cream and regular whipped cream make this a mountain of, you guessed it, chocolate goodness.

Leatherby's Family Creamery • 1872 W. 5400 South, Taylorsville; 801-967-2566. Open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to midnight.

Price • $6.29.

Shop talk • Leatherby's is a family-owned restaurant that has served Salt Lake County for 27 years. The restaurant, which just this month expanded its dining area, whips up more than 30 flavors of ice cream, sorbet, yogurt and sherbet every day in a special 24-hour process. Oh yeah, they serve burgers, fries and more to help curb that sugar rush.
