A fire gutted a duplex Monday night in South Salt Lake.

The blaze was reported about 9:10 p.m. at a home near 3100 S. 700 East, said deputy South Salt Lake Fire Chief Kevin Bowman. It caused $70,000 to $80,000 damage and left both units uninhabitable.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no one was injured, Bowman said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it does not appear to be suspicious, Bowman said. It apparently began in the kitchen or front room of one of the units.

Two families were displaced, Bowman said. One was receiving aid from the Red Cross of Utah and the other was staying with family nearby. No other buildings were damaged.
