Salt Lake Bees top RedHawks 8-7 in 10 innings

The Salt Lake Bees stayed as hot as the summertime weather Wednesday night at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Despite squandering a three-run lead in the ninth inning, the Bees escaped with an 8-7 win over Oklahoma City.

Andrew Romine's single drove in Ed Lucas with one out in the 10th inning, giving the Bees their seventh straight win.

Salt Lake has won 10 of its last 11, going back to July 29.

After the RedHawks rallied from a 7-4 deficit in the top of the ninth, Lucas opened the bottom of the 10th with a walk. One out later, Efren Navarro singled Lucas to third, setting up Romine's game-winning hit.

The Bees pounded out 16 hits in the game, including four triples, which tied a 10-year-old team record.

Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and it could have been worse for the Bees if Doug Deeds hadn't robbed leadoff man Mike Hessman of extra bases with a sensational catch in left field.

Deeds caught the ball as he crashed into the fence — an especially commendable effort after his recent three-week stay on the disabled list.

In the third, the Bees tied the game 1-1. With one out, Deeds' line drive was misplayed by center fielder Jimmy Paredes. He broke back, froze, charged in and let the ball skip past him. Deeds ended up with a triple and scored when Trevor Crowe followed with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Bees took a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Kole Calhoun dribbled a ground ball toward third, but with the infield swung around to the right against the left-handed hitter, the RedHawks' Matt Dominguez couldn't knock it down. Calhoun ended up on second with a double. He scored when Hank Conger singled to center field.

Then, with one out, RedHawk starter Fernando Abad struck out Cory Aldridge, pushing him to 59 pitches for the night.

Abad, who has spent most of this season with the parent Houston Astros, was replaced by Brian Sanches. He proceeded to walk Lucas, and Matt Long followed with an RBI single to center.

After the RedHawks made it 3-2, the Bees seemingly took command with two runs in fifth and two more in the sixth. But Oklahoma City scored three runs off Salt Lake reliever Adam Russell in the top of the ninth to tie the game 7-7.

Owlz 7, Rockies 4 • Andrew Ray drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth, and Orem added two insurance runs in the eighth to beat visiting Grand Junction.

Raptors 8, Chukars 6 • Ogden scored four runs in the eighth inning, including a two-run homer by Jesus Valdez, to win at Idaho Falls. —
