Celeb blogger Perez Hilton is riding in to rescue the virtue of "Dancing With the Stars" pro (and sometime Utahn) Derek Hough.

Hilton tore apart a report from The National Enquirer (repeated on Radar Online), which reported that a fan tried to approach Hough while he was "shimmying with his buddies" in a Salt Lake City gay club recently.

The fan told The Enquirer: "I was like, OK, he's clearly not comfortable about havĀing his picture taken in a gay bar. If you're not gay, then what's the problem? Derek's behavior was very suspect. ... Derek very well may not be gay. But he sure was dressed pretty, and he threw an impressive hissy fit when I asked for a photo!"

Hilton defended Hough, arguing that "we can dream up just as many reasons why someone might not want to be photographed — like you've never had a bad hair day!" Hilton cites the rumor that Hough is dating his recent "DWTS" dance partner Katherine Jenkins (who was in Salt Lake City last month for a pre-Pioneer Day perfomance), and opines that "plenty of straight folk enjoy gay clubs."

"His private life is just that — private," Hilton wrote. "Even in Utah, shimmying isn't a crime."
