Defense has strong outing in Utes' first scrimmage

Wanted to pass along a few quick hits from Utah's first scrimmage. Jordan Wynn wasn't too happy with the offense, saying the Utes made too many mistakes such as penalties and had some poor exchanges between the quarterbacks and running backs. Wynn was 8-of-16 for 123 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Senior Luke Matthews had four catches for 94 yards and a touchdown and DeVonte Christopher had two catches for 23 yards and a touchdown. Backup quarterback Jon Hays was 2-of-5 for 55 yards and freshman Travis Wilson was 6-of-7 for 65 yards. Wilson took some hits, but Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was happy with the way the freshman moved his feet. Kelvin York had eight rushes for 41 yards, but it was newcomer James Poole who led the backs with 10 carries for 65 yards. He is still behind in learning the offense, but his natural abilities could earn the junior college transfer playing time sooner rather than later. The offensive line continues to be a concern at tackle. Defensively, safety Eric Rowe had a great pass breakup as he continues to be one of the standouts in camp. Junior college transfer Tenny Palepoi forced a fumble and recovered two fumbles. Corner Mo Lee had an interception, helping the defense rule the day. The defense was credited for seven sacks and eight pass breakups.
