Utah QBs know Tuesday's scrimmage is a big one for them

Utah freshman quarterback Travis Wilson admitted he is putting a lot of pressure on himself to perform well in Tuesday's scrimmage, believing he is oh-so-close to edging out veteran Jordan Wynn for the starting spot. "I feel like there is a pretty good chance of me starting," he said. "I am right there pushing Jordan every day and competing." Those are some big words coming from a guy who has yet to take a snap at the college level, but Wynn isn't offended. He said he likes the competition and the two are friends off the field. Tuesday's scrimmage sounds like it is going to be an interesting one between the quarterbacks. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said Wilson, Wynn and Jon Hays would all get an equal amount of snaps. Freshman Adam Schulz, who did a nice job in the two-minute drill at the end of practice, will get the least amount of snaps. The Utes are experimenting with sophomore Jacoby Hale at defensive end because the Utes are so loaded at linebacker. The 6-foot, 225-pound Hale has the instincts to play the position, Whittingham said. "At that open end position you don't have to be 6-4, 270 to play that spot," he said. "We have had guys function well in the past at his size so we'll see what happens." Offensive lineman Sam Brenner (right shoulder) and linebacker LT Filiaga (left knee) are out of practice a week to three weeks with injuries. Brenner could be back next week, Whittingham said. Offensive lineman Miles Mason didn't practice with the team but was out of his protective boot Monday afternoon.
