Andrew Bird at Red Butte Garden tonight

Andrew Bird performs tonight.Spotlight show • Andrew Bird's indie-folk makes use of multitrack recorders, loop pedals, guitar, glockenspiel, keyboard, whistling and his signature instrument, the violin. But Bird is no longer resistant to collaborating, as he is surrounded by the best band members he has ever assembled. "Before, I wouldn't take more than one person into the studio at a time," he said in a phone interview. "I was wary of deferring to other musicians." This time around, the recording sessions for Bird's new album "Break It Yourself" featured a band that "all had the spirit of jazz inside them." When he's not writing or recording solo music, Bird has begun writing music for films, which he enjoys, even though he has to follow the director's lead. Bird scored Jonathan Segal's 2011 movie, "Norman," about a darkly funny teen. Amadou & Mariam open.
