Authorities identify West Jordan man who drowned in Utah Lake

Utah County authorities Monday identified a man who drowned in Utah Lake as Hoang Kim Trinh.

Deputies said Trinh, 36, of West Jordan, was boating with friends about 7 p.m. Sunday near the American Fork boat harbor when their boat broke down.

As others tried to fix it, Trinh, who was not wearing a life jacket, jumped into the water to swim. While swimming, deputies said he started to call for help. A friend grabbed two life jackets and jumped into the lake to help him.

Deputies said the friend reached Trinh, but the wind started to blow and Trinh and his friend were unable to hold onto the vests. They became separated from each other and the boat.

A Utah Lake State Park ranger and search and rescue team members responded and pulled the two men from the lake.

Both were transported to a hospital where Trinh was pronounced dead. Trinh's friend suffered from mild hypothermia but was expected to survive, authorities said.
