BYU has chosen its captains for the 2012 football season, coach Bronco Mendenhall announced after practice this morning. The captains will be Riley Nelson (offense), David Foote (special teams) and Brandon Ogletree (defense). Mendenhall said the players voted on the captains, but were given "pretty specific criteria" in what to look for while voting. "First, representing the institution," he said. "So there had to be a strong faith component. Excellent students was another part of it. How they conduct themselves socially, what kind of leaders they were on the team, and what kind of players." All three guys are seniors; Foote is somewhat of a surprise if only because he was a walk-on prior to this season, and has never had a significant role in games. Obviously, his captaincy shows the amount of respect he has from his teammates. The other big news out of practice is that Justin Sorensen has began kicking again. Sorensen said he attempted about 10 field goals on Wednesday, having tried four field goals on Tuesday. Sorensen said he plans on being ready to kick in the opener. "It is going to be up to the coaches, and really this next week — how my back and leg feel, with just getting back into things. If they want me, I'm there," he said. I briefly spoke to Marcus Mathews after practice, and he confirmed that he has been moved from tight end to receiver. He said the move is temporary and he plans on playing tight end most of the season. However, I asked receivers coach Ben Cahoon about the switch, and he made it sound like it is a little more than temporary. Cahoon said Mathews and redshirt freshman Terenn Houk have basically traded positions, with Houk having said Tuesday that he has been moved to tight end. Mathews said he had strep throat for a week and lost about 15 pounds, but insists he has regained most of that weight and is back up to 235 pounds. He entered camp at 238, he said. Also, coach Bronco Mendenhall said Kaneakua Friel has taken the lead in the race to be the starting tight end. He praised Friel's consistency. I've got to run off to some meetings this afternoon, so I will have a more complete recap of today's post-practice interviews with Mendenhall, Sorensen, Mathews and Cahoon later tonight.
