Whittingham, Leach good would-be hunting partners and good friends

The friendship between Utah coach Kyle Whittingham and Mike Leach is becoming more and more of a media topic now that Leach is coaching at Washington State. At the Pac-12 media day, Leach joked that Whittingham was the coach he'd like to go hunting with given the chance because his home is "sandwiched between a lot of mountains." Whittingham noted that while the hunting might not be good, he'd pick Leach as his hunting partner for "the entertainment value alone." "I'd just sit and listen to him talk about whatever," he said. The two often go to dinner when Leach is in town visiting relatives and Whittingham admitted he has hit up his friend for some offensive insights. "Me and Mike have visited many, many times over the years and we've had him in clinic-ing our offense," Whittingham said. "It's very simplistic, believe it or not, there's not a lot of different plays on his play sheet. They just run them so well and their conversions and their routes, they have everything down so well and it's so finely tuned that he doesn't need a long, extensive play sheet. They do a few things and they do them very, very well." It's doubtful the two will do much sharing now that they are in the same conference and play Nov. 3 in Rice-Eccles Stadium. "I think he's a great fit for Washington State," Whittingham said. "They've had some very good throwing teams up there in the past over the years and I think he's a great fit for that program." Whittingham is a master at remembering details so it will be entertaining to see how well his memory serves him when the two teams meet. My hunch is it won't take Whittingham long to figure out any new tricks Leach might have in store for his defense.
