A man died Sunday in an ATV accident in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Walter S. Engel, 74, was riding with two friends on the canyon's popular Mineral Fork Trail around 9:15 a.m. on Sunday when he rolled his vehicle, said Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department.

Engel, of Midvale, was speeding down a hill after reaching the top of Mineral Basin when he veered slightly off the trail, Hoyal said. Engel's ATV rolled and landed on top of him. He died at the scene.

The accident occurred in an area with no cell phone coverage, forcing Engel's friends to ride a half hour to reach a place to call for help, Hoyal said.

UPD, Unified Fire Department, a medical helicopter and several search and rescue teams responded to the accident, but the Engel could not be revived.

Mineral Fork Trail is located approximately six miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon, on the canyon's south side.
