A 7-year-old boy was injured Sunday afternoon when his dirt bike collided with an ATV at a popular outdoor recreation area in Tooele County.

Tooele County sheriff's deputies said the boy was riding on a Honda motorcycle in the Little Valley area, about 20 miles west of Vernon, when he came to an intersection of trails.

Trees in the area caused a blindspot and the boy didn't realize that a Rhino ATV being driven by a woman was coming down a second trail. Deputies said the two saw each other at the last second and both tried to avoid the collision. The boy turned his bike, but the momentum sent him into the path of ATV.

The boy told medical personnel that one of the ATV's wheels drove over his head, deputies said.

He suffered broken bones and cuts to his face. A helicopter flew him to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City. He was expected to survive.

Authorities said he was wearing a helmet, which probably saved his life.

The driver of the ATV said the boy was traveling quickly at the time of the crash and was upset, authorities said.

No citations were issued and alcohol was not a factor.
