Provo police on Tuesday released the identity of an 18-year-old man whose body was found 200 feet below a hiking trail on Aug. 29.
Police, saying the family did not want the name released, last week had refused to identify Aaron Joseph Daly, of Provo. The Salt Lake Tribune filed a formal request for release of the information under Utah's Government Records Access and Management Act, which was initially denied by Provo police records personnel.
However, later Tuesday, as the Tribune prepared to appeal, police released the information, which is public record.
Provo police Sgt. Brandon Post also said Tuesday that Daly's death has been determined to be an accidental fall in Rock Canyon. Investigators believe Daly fell on Aug. 28 from a ledge off the designated Rock Canyon trail area. A hiker found his body the next day.
According to an obituary on the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home web site, Daly is survived by his parents, Todd and Cindy Daly, and three siblings. He was described as an avid outdoors , video games and long boarding enthusiast who also played the cello.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Grandview 10th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Provo.
