The Utah Nonprofits Association has received a $10,000 grant from American Express for Community Development.

The grant will be used to provide training to the staffs of nonprofit organizations statewide on how to measure the success of their various programs and how their groups can connect and use local resources.

Chris Bray, executive director of the UNA, said one challenge facing nonprofit organizations, especially small- to medium-sized and rural nonprofits, is determining outcomes for the services they provide.

He said many cite anecdotal information as their primary sources on how they are making a difference in their communities. While anecdotal information is important, more and more funding sources are requiring research and data-based outcome measures, he said.

The first training program offered under the grant will be held Nov. 1, in Cedar City at Southern Utah University. Additional information will be made available in the near future on UNA's website at www.utahnonprofits.org.
