Man charged with attempted murder in West Point shooting

A man who shot another man at a West Point party with a stolen gun was charged with first-degree felony attempted murder in 2nd District Court on Friday.

On the night of Sept. 1, a fight broke out between the alleged shooter and another person at a party inside a home near 412 North and 2000 West. A handgun went off in the kitchen, prompting some people to run from the home while others barricaded themselves in other rooms, according to the charges.

Some of the witnesses saw the man waving the gun around outside, the charges state. Witnesses told police they then heard the sound of two more gunshots and saw a man grasping his upper body, bleeding.

The suspected shooter fled on foot but officers found him in a nearby neighborhood. Police found the handgun in the backyard of the home directly behind the house where the party took place.

The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive.

Investigators later determined the handgun was reported stolen out of Ogden and that the shooter had given police someone else's name as his own. He was also charged with giving false personal information, a misdemeanor.
