Sandy man arrested after backyard shooting, standoff

A Sandy man was arrested Saturday night after allegedly firing a shotgun in his backyard and then holing up in his home as police waited him out for more than four hours.

The 38-year-old was arrested at about 8:45 p.m. on suspicion of reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and firing a gun within city limits.

Neighbors heard the man yelling in his backyard at 291 E. 8680 South before the shots were fired, but it didn't seem that he was talking to anyone in particular.

Sgt. Jon Arnold with the Sandy Police Department said one of the shots hit a house north of the suspect's backyard and entered into a bedroom. Arnold said no one was in the room at the time and no one was injured, but that people may have been inside the house in other rooms.

The shots were first reported at about 4 p.m. Saturday and the situation turned into a standoff as police tried to make contact with the man inside the house. When he surrendered to police after more than four hours, he told them that he wasn't aware of the scene outside his house.

"We're assuming he was probably passed out for most of that time," Arnold said.
