Shanty Canyon • Firefighters will remain on Stansbury Island watching for flare-ups.

Firefighters had completed containment lines around the nearly 6,000-acre Shanty Canyon Fire on the Great Salt Lake's Stansbury Island on Thursday and declared it 100 percent controlled by nightfall.

The fire, which was ignited by a lightning strike on Monday, blackened grass and brush on the unpopulated, rugged island before a series of rainstorms aided crews in gaining the upper hand.

Cami Lee, a fire information officer for the Bureau of Land Management, said that approximately 20 firefighters were expected to be released for duty elsewhere sometime Thursday night, but the Shanty Canyon blaze site would be monitored for any new flare-ups.

Lee also had good news regarding the 700-acre West Cricket Fire, another lightning-caused blaze that was burning in timber and grasslands 40 miles northwest of Leamington in Millard County. That fire also was 100 percent contained by Thursday night, she said.

No injuries or structural damage have been reported for either of the fires.
