West Valley police investigate shooting that left man critical

West Valley City police Friday were investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition.

West Valley Police Sgt. Mike Powell said a woman called police saying her husband had been shot. A public safety dispatcher confirmed the call came in at 12:20 a.m. When officers arrived, they found the victim, a man in his 50s, suffering gunshot wounds at a home 3700 S. 6800 West. He was airlifted to Intermountain Medical Center.

Forensic examiners from West Valley Police were still processing the scene at noon on Friday. Police tape blocked off the driveway and entrance to one side of a duplex on 6800 West. Another officer could be seen combing the area around a fenced-off canal across the street from the crime scene. The duplex sits on the corner of 6800 West and Bonnie Arlene Drive (3710 South).

The victim's next-door neighbor, Chaz Kristensen, said he could hear gunshots coming from the other side of the duplex late Thursday night. Kristensen said he decided to stay inside for safety's sake, but when he came out a little bit later he saw a lot of police activity.

"When I came out, I seen the cops chasing some guy," he said.

Kristensen said a husband and wife with at least one child live in the house where the shooting occurred. He said he did not know their names. Police have not released the man's name. No one had been taken into custody for the shooting as of Friday afternoon, police said.
