Utah forecast: Smoky skies could persist for a couple days

A cold front that moved into Utah overnight brought an unwelcome visitor: smoke from multiple fires in Idaho.

The National Weather Service reported Monday afternoon that a northwesterly airflow was responsible for the murky air. Those conditions could persist in northern and central Utah for several days because only light winds are expected, the agency said.

The smoke lead the Utah Division of Air Quality to rate air quality in northern Utah as moderate for Monday and Tuesday.

The National Weather Service predicted high temperatures for Tuesday in the upper-70s to low-80s, up just a few degrees from Monday's forecast. Overnight lows, meanwhile, approached nippy, with the mercury retreating into the low-50s.

With fall officially beginning Friday, summer weather was hanging on in Utah's Dixie, however, with highs Tuesday in the low- to mid-90s and overnight lows still in the low-60s.

Salt Lake City's high temperature for Monday was forecast at 78 degrees, with an 82 expected on Tuesday; Ogden looked for 77 and 81 degrees, respectively; Provo 81 and 85; Logan 79 and 82; Wendover 79 and 82; Duchesne 74 and 77; Cedar City 80 and 82; St. George 92 and 95; and Moab 86 and 85 degrees.
