Bum headline

By its poor word choice in the headline "Guard slain at embassy in Libya was once a Snowbird ski bum," The Salt Lake Tribune did a disservice to the memory of Glen Doherty, to itself and to the wider Utah community.

Nothing about Doherty equates with the derogatory term "bum." Glen was much more, as the article successfully conveyed. He was a Snowbird employee who momentarily chose a lifestyle we liked to call the "pro leisure tour."

The exceptional point that was lost with your headline is how Doherty, through remarkable personal attributes and the support of his family and peers, transformed himself into a national treasure.

He will leave a lasting impact on literally hundreds of Utahns who themselves honor him by striving to be exceptional in their own right. In so doing, they make our community stronger, better and much brighter for the future.
