Utah Valley University in Orem has received a $3 million federal grant to train displaced workers for upcoming jobs at the National Security Agency's cyber-security data center in Bluffdale.

Salt Lake Community College is one of 12 colleges nationwide that are part of North Carolina's Forsyth Technical Community College Consortium, which received a $15 million federal grant to develop and expand workforce training in the biotechnology industry.

The grants are part of the U.S. Department of Labor's Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative, which is designed to help workers who lost jobs because of global competition.

"This strategic investment will enhance ties among community colleges, universities, employers and other local partners while ensuring that students have access to the skills and resources they need to compete for high-wage, high-skill careers," Hilda L. Solis, U.S. Secretary of Labor, said in a statement announcing the awards.

In total, 297 schools received grants worth a combined $500 million. The grants included 27 awards to community college and university consortia totaling $359 million and 27 awards to individual institutions totaling $78 million.
