Gillispie's departure comes less than a month after Texas Tech said it was looking into allegations of player mistreatment by the veteran coach and that it had reported practice-time violations to the NCAA.Gillispie coached one year at Texas Tech, finishing the 2011-12 season with an 8-23 record and one Big 12 victory.
Heart ailment sidelines Suns' Frye
NBA • Phoenix Suns forward Channing Frye will be out indefinitely after a preseason physical revealed an enlarged heart. The Suns said Frye has developed a dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition discovered during an echocardiogram by team cardiologist Dr. Tim Byrne.
Frye signed with Phoenix, his hometown team, in 2009 and has averaged 11.5 points and 5.9 rebounds in three seasons. He averaged 10.5 points and 5.9 rebounds last season.
Chavez fails drug test after loss
BOXING • Middleweight fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could be stripped of his $3 million purse, depending on the explanation he offers to Nevada boxing regulators about a positive test for marijuana after his first professional loss last weekend in Las Vegas, officials said Wednesday.
Chavez (46-1-1) was guaranteed $3 million for the WBC title fight against Sergio Martinez.
