No. 12 BYU wins seventh straight game in women's soccer

Logan • Defender Dana Oldroyd Cusick scored on a 30-yard shot to lift No. 12-ranked BYU over Utah State 1-0 in women's soccer Thursday.

Cusick scored her second goal of the season in the ninth minute for the Cougars (9-1-0), who won their seventh straight game.

BYU goalkeeper Erica Owens made two saves.

Dixie State 4, Academy of Art 3 • In San Francisco, the Red Storm scored four second-half goals, including two by Jennifer Mason just 62 seconds apart, to prevail in Pacific West Conference play. Mason scored goals in the 57th and 58th minutes, Megan Marchbanks tied the game in the 66th minute and Kelsey Tesoro scored the game-winner in the 85th minute for Dixie State (2-3-2, 2-1 PWC), which outshot Academy of Art 16-4 in the second half.

Women's volleyball

BYU 3, Pepperdine 0 • In Provo, Jennifer Hamson tallied 16 kills and three blocks to lead the No. 16-ranked Cougars over the No. 14 Waves 25-23, 25-17, 25-22. It was BYU's first win over a Top-15 team in Provo since 2007.

Alexa Gray had 13 kills and Heather Hannemann had 43 assists for the Cougars (13-0), who have swept their past seven opponents.

Utah State 3, Seattle University 2 • In Logan, Rachel Orr had 14 kills and Shay Sorensen had 13 as the Aggies held off the Redhawks 25-23, 27-25, 23-25, 20-25, 20-18 in Western Athletic Conference play. Paige Neves had 51 assists for the Aggies (8-4, 3-0 WAC).

North Dakota 3, Weber State 2 • Rebecca Fuchs had 18 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell short against the Sioux, 23-25, 28-26, 23-25, 25-23, 15-8 in Ogden.

Weber State (6-8) has lost three straight games.

Men's soccer

Dixie State 1, Academy of Art 1 • In San Francisco, Seph Azevedo scored in the 43rd minute, but the Red Storm conceded a goal late in the second half to settle for a draw in Pacific West Conference action.

Dixie State (1-5-1, 0-2-1 PWC), which hit the post three times during the game, outshot Academy of Art 7-1 in overtime.

Women's tennis

Provo • Six Cougars advanced to the quarterfinals after day one of the BYU Invitational.

In doubles, BYU's Meghan Sheehan-Dizon and Desiree Tran defeated Weber State's Annika Karlsen and Ashley Tanner, 8-2. Weber State's Kristi Elmer and Thais Kurer beat BYU's Morgan Anderson and Aubrey Paul, 8-4.

In singles, five Cougars advanced to the quarterfinals, including Tran, who outlasted Boise State's Teal Vosburgh in the longest game of the tournament, 6-7(3-7), 6-1, 6-4.

The second day of the tournament begins at 9 a.m. Friday.
