A 56-year-old Orem man died Friday after a head-on collision.

The man was driving north on State Street when, witnesses tell police, he suffered a medical problem and slumped over the wheel, said Orem police Sgt. Craig Martinez. His Nissan Xterra drifted into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a southbound pickup truck about 11:30 a.m.

An 18-year-old man who was driving the truck was taken to the hospital in critical condition with severe leg injuries. The older man died, but it's unclear at this point whether the medical problem or the accident killed him, Martinez said.

Both men were the only ones in their respective vehicles.

Police are still investigating the accident and await results from the state medical examiner's office as to the cause of the man's death. Police are waiting to release the man's name until his family has been notified.
