A Roosevelt woman died Friday after an illegal U-turn on State Route 40.

Shirley Reed, 77, pulled her Honda sport utility vehicle off to the side of SR 40 at mile marker 109, about two miles west of Roosevelt, in order to turn around. But Reed failed to see the westbound Dodge Stratus before trying to turn, according to a Utah Highway Patrol news release.

Reed pulled out in front of the Stratus, which struck the driver's side and knocked over the SUV about 4:43 p.m.

Roosevelt City firefighters extricated Reed from the SUV and took her to the hospital, but she later died from serious internal injuries and head trauma.

A 19-year-old man and 21-year-old woman from Randlet, who were in the Stratus, had minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital.
