I don't have a problem with Santa Clara and Saratoga Springs seeking federal funds to help with their flood damage. It's one of the great things about these United States of America — people across the nation want to help each other in times of need.

My problem is with the governor of our great state, who just signed a request to Washington asking for the federal funds ("Herbert requests federal assistance for Washington County flooding," Tribune, Sept. 21). And I have a problem when homeowners express frustration with Saratoga Springs city officials for dragging their feet after the Dump Fire and Mayor Mia Love explained that they were waiting for federal and state grants.

But my real problem comes a week or two after a federal aid event, when the mayors and some citizens of these and other cities and towns and Gov. Gary Herbert forget how much they love the federal government and campaign to get Washington off their backs.

I don't think they are paying attention, even to themselves.
