Low-cost cell phone carrier Cricket is now offering the iPhone 5 in Salt Lake City, the fourth provider to support Apple's new mobile device.
But Cricket does not sell the phone at a subsidized price, meaning customers pay a full price for the phone in lieu of committing to a two-year contract. Cricket is selling the 16-gigabyte iPhone 5 (black or white) for $499. The carrier has a rate plan of $55 per month for unlimited voice, text and data.
The phone is being sold in all company-owned stores in Salt Lake City and 60 other markets. The carrier's coverage is nationwide. The iPhone 5, which was released Sept. 21, is also available for AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.
The new phone has a larger 4-inch screen, thinner, lighter design and now supports 4G LTE. While Cricket does have the faster 4G LTE data network in some areas, it has not yet launched in Utah. A spokeswoman said a launch date has not been announced for Utah.
