Want to park downtown? Now, they've got a cell-phone app for that.

Yep, motorists can now feed the meters in Salt Lake City with payments by mobile phone. A new application compatible with most cell phones makes it possible through the city's partnership with Aparc Systems and QuickPay Corp.

"Mobile parking payments bring a new level of convenience and ease of use, especially over the old coin-operated meters, and will streamline the parking and payment process for downtown parkers," said Transportation Director Robin Hutcheson.

Since spring 2012, Salt Lake City has replaced more than 2,100 single-space, coin-operated meters with new pay stations. Motorists have the option of paying with coins or credit/debit cards at the blue parking kiosks. Now, they also can pay via cell phone using the free QP QuickPay mobile application.

Parkers can simply tap — for phones equipped with near field communication— or scan the QP QuickPay sign with their smart phones and be on their way. Users can even receive expiration notifications automatically and add time remotely.

To use QP QuickPay, drivers must download the free app for iPhone or Android to create an account. Mobile phone users without smart phones can create an account and pay by phone via text message or voice pay. Users receive e-receipts for all transactions and can access their full account histories online.
