BYU crushes Hawaii 47-0, but UH coach Norm Chow not all that impressed

Most people figured BYU would have little trouble with Hawaii on Friday night, but how many predicted a 47-0 blowout. The Cougars thoroughly dominated the Warriors, racking up 540 yards of offense to just 149 for Hawaii. it was Hawaii's fewest yards of offense in a game since it got just 145 yards in a home loss to BYU in 1996. The Warriors were shut out for the first time since Oct. 3, 1998 (a 28-0 home loss to SMU) and had their 192-game scoring streak snapped. It was Hawaii's worst loss (47 points) since a 70-14 loss at Fresno State in 2004. Hawaii's 108 passing yards was its lowest passing total since a 102-yard performance in a 1998 home loss to San Jose State. "It means a lot to us to get a shutout," said BYU defensive end Ziggy Ansah. "We have been working hard towards this. We can do better, and we have things to improve on. Turnovers are something we always focus on, and we need to get more of them." Ansah almost recovered a fumble for a touchdown, but after a review officials deemed Spencer Hadley to be down at the 3-yard-line before he fumbled into the end zone, negating Ansah's TD. Quote of the night came from BYU cornerback Preston Hadley: "I don't think we should walk off just patting ourselves on the back." Hadley said. "This isn't the best team we have played." Hawaii coach Norm Chow wasn't exactly a gracious loser Friday night. A couple of Chow's comments from the quote sheet distributed after the game: On how BYU played: "It's not about them. It's about us. Our lack of ability to tackle and the lack of ability to move the ball on offense. It had nothing to do with them." Chow on freshman QB Taysom Hill, who rushed for 143 yards. Only Michigan's Denard Robinson and Ohio State's Braxton Miller have rushed for more yards in a single game this season, among quarterbacks: "We saw a little bit of tape. We knew he was a good runner. We weren't sure who was going to be the quarterback." Chow on the margin of the loss: "We've got to grow up. This is a big boy business. Nobody is feeling sorry for us. We can't feel sorry for ourselves."

Chow on what's next for the Warriors:

"We're just going back to work Monday. Nothing else we can do. We have to learn from it. We have to know how hard it is to win against a good team like we just played and just go back to work. That's all we know how to do. We're young, but again we don't make excuses.

——————————- The Cougars suffered a big loss in the game, despite the score. Junior RB Mike Alisa fractured his arm on BYU's first drive of the game, the one that resulted in a short TD run by Jamaal Williams. Mendenhall said he doesn't know how long Alisa will be out, but it would be a shocker if he makes it back before the bowl game. Safety Mike Hague has a torn muscle in his calf and didn't play at all. He's out two more weeks. Also, Mendenhall said after the game that junior tight end Austin Holt did not dress and will redshirt this season. Mendenhall said Holt is "not able to go any more this season. His knee just isn't capable, so he is redshirting this year. We decided that after the last game. I felt he shouldn't play another snap, and the doctors confirmed that decison." Mendenhall didn't address fellow tight end Richard Wilson's situation, but he's also coming off major knee surgery and might be asked to redshirt as well. Devin Mahina was the second tight end, behind Kaneakua Friel, and had a 12-yard TD reception from Taysom Hill. A few more odds and ends from the game: * BYU's defense has held 11 straight opponents under 300 total yards. Hawaii's 149 total yards was the fewest for a Cougar opponent since UNLV got just 144 in 2010. * It was BYU's first shutout since a 52-0 win over Wyoming in 2009.* It was the first time a freshman quarterback has started and led BYU to a win in his debut since redshirt freshman Ty Detmer did it in 1988. * QB Taysom Hill's 143 rushing yards was the most by a BYU quarterback since OC Brandon Doman had 164 vs. Colorado State in 2001. * BYU's 396 rushing yards was the most under Mendenhall and the most since it had 410 against Colorado State in 2001. * BYU rugby star Paul Lasike rushed 10 times for 40 yards and scored the first TD of his career. He had two TDs on the night. * Receiver Cody Hoffman extended his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 24. * The Cougars have made 70 straight PATs until Riley Stephenson had one blocked. He later missed another PAT, pushing the kick wide left.
