Butch Vig should be resting on his laurels since he produced the Foo Fighter's latest album, which cleaned up at the Grammys earlier this year. (In addition, he produced Nirvana's epochal "Nevermind.") But Vig, 57, has fun when he plays with his dance-rock band Garbage, back together after several long hiatuses in the first decade of the millennium. The band had cut short is 2005 concert tour because of exhaustion," Vig said in a Tribune interview, and it took time to realize that when together, there is "magic" with the four members. The veteran skier (who has tackled the slopes at Alta and Snowbird) convinced his bandmates to ditch a major label when prepping their upcoming release, "Not Your Kind of People." "It's both liberating and terrifying," he said of the split. "We butted heads with our label on our last album ... They're always looking for pop hits. Sometimes they would try to homogenize our sound."
