Monday on Utah TV: "Half the Sky" is both horrifying and uplifting

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide (8 p.m., PBS/Ch. 7) is absolutely horrifying and uplifting at the same time.

Nicholas Kristof, who co-authored the book with his wife, travels with celebrities America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde to 10 countries where women and girls fight to change their oppressive living conditions.

We see women and girls forced into prostitution, forced to endure gender-based violence, endure high maternal mortality rates and more. And we see efforts to battle these conditions and empower women and girls.

The two-part, four hour documentary concludes Tuesday at 8 p.m.
