Despite leading the Canadian new wave-influenced indie-rock band for close to 15 years, Metric frontwoman Emily Haines is still "obsessed with writing the perfect song," she said in a Tribune interview. "It's a hard thing to pin down, but I hope to find it someday." Her fans would offer that Metric has been writing near-perfect songs for year, especially on 2012's "Synthetica," a layered collection of arena-ready hooks, choruses and arrangements that shows that pop need not avoid depth. "We're dedicated ourselves to finding a feeling," Haines, 38, said. "We're cursed with asking a lot of big questions." The aggressive persona that Haines projects onstage is so persuasive that it is surprising to hear that Haines "still feel[s] like an awkward teenager at times." You might also have heard Metric's musical contributions on the film "Cosmopolis," starring Robert Pattinson, who also starred in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," featuring the Metric song "Eclipse (All Yours)." "[Pattinson] is a really good guy, by the way," Haines said. But Kristen Stewart shouldn't worry about Haines stealing him away. "I don't know if he's a muse," Haines said.
