As Emily Murnin celebrated her second singles title, it warmed her coach's heart.
Judge Memorial already had been assured a state title, and it didn't need the win. That wasn't what gave coach Lani Wilcox a wave of emotion.
"It's great to watch a senior go out like that," she said. "It means more than the overall title, to be honest with you."
Murnin claimed one of two events for Judge as the Bulldogs rolled to their second straight 3A tennis title Saturday. Only Park City was close to Judge, and a number of other teams finished in a logjam in the middle of the standings.
Kate Iwasaki repeated as the third singles champion for the young Bulldogs squad, which only loses Murnin next year. But young didn't translate to unpoised. All three Judge singles players competed in their respective finals.
Murnin won her title with an authoritative 6-1, 6-2 win over Snow Canyon's Bergen Nelson. Iwasaki had similar success against another Snow Canyon player, Emily Till.
The only Judge singles player who didn't win was Whitney Weisberg, who ran into defending champion Lacey Hancock from Pine View. Hancock endured extended points by finding good angles of her own. She dropped her only three games of the tournament in a 6-2, 6-1 win.
"It's nice to show people I can do it again, that I'm not just a one-time winner," Hancock said. "I don't represent just me, I represent my whole team. We're still here. We can still compete."
Other programs got their shots in doubles. Second-place Park City got a title in second doubles from McKenna Tychsen and Natalie Frost. Juan Diego got its best run in first doubles when Grace Claudius and Casandra Granhoej topped a tough Spanish Fork team in three sets.
