Police say a man tried and failed to run from them on Tuesday as he attempted to escape a warrant for running from police.

The 26-year-old man appeared in Midvale Justice Court on a traffic charge, and while he was there, a bailiff informed the judge that the man had a $25,000 warrant. The warrant was for failure to stop at the command of a police officer, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

But when the bailiff tried to take the man into custody about 11:30 a.m., he ran. Since Midvale Elementary School and Midvale Middle School were nearby, the schools were locked down so the man couldn't get inside as police looked for him, Hoyal said.

Police found him about a half hour later at 7847 S. Oak St., with two injured and possibly broken ankles. The man told police he jumped off a retaining wall, Hoyal said.

After he's treated at St. Mark's Hospital, the man will be booked not only for the warrant, but for a second count of failure to stop at the command of an officer as well as escape from custody, Hoyal said.
