Re "Critics call Chaffetz's Libya probe a political stunt" (Tribune, Oct. 10):
It is astonishing and unconscionable that Rep. Jason Chaffetz has so quickly and so obviously politicized the horrible events that took place last Sept. 11 at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, when our ambassador and a security detail were killed in a mortar attack.
If Chaffetz had any interest in protecting the lives of Americans serving abroad, he would not be making the rounds on Fox News, insinuating that the policies of the Obama administration were somehow responsible for these reprehensible acts.
Going on television ahead of the completion of the FBI's investigation, as well as his own congressional hearing, and making wild, politically motivated accusations is irresponsible and a dereliction of duty as a member of Congress.
In his haste to smear the president, Chaffetz dishonors the memory of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, security officer Glen Doherty and the two other Americans killed on that day.
