As the Waterford soccer team began the defense of its state title Wednesday against South Sevier, coach Tim Dolbin reminded his team to play hard no matter the opponent.
The Ravens clicked in all phases of their game as Caroline Coats and Madeline Morrill each scored twice in the 7-0 win.
"I don't think anyone on this team feels a sense of entitlement," said senior Sydney Harrison, who assisted on two goals. "We know if we don't play hard every time out, there will be no title."
The Ravens offense left little doubt as to their strength with an early score from Grace Sponaugle off a perfect corner kick from Harrison.
By intermission, the defending state champs had five goals on the board while North Sanpete had barely crossed midfield.
"We've got some really good ball handlers back there, and they have shown great poise this season," said Tolbin.
With a comfortable lead, the Ravens, playing with a number of non-starters, still looked impressive on offense.
Jayden Brennon delivered goal No. 6 when she caught a pass mid-box, and fired home a high-velocity ball. Underclassmen Jacqueline Pollard added the final marker after a teammate's shot hit the crossbar and fell directly at her feet.
"I think we had more than 20 players that got on the field tonight," said Tolbin. "It's nice to get your starters some rest, but even better to get the younger players some playoff touches."
