Democrats for Love

As a 40-year registered Democrat, a Mormon and the son of a Democrat former member of Congress, I am keenly interested in the 4th Congressional District race between Rep. Jim Matheson and Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love.

Both candidates are qualified and desire the best for the citizens of Utah. Both are honorable persons with firm family values. Either could serve admirably. The issue in this election is not Matheson versus Love.

No, the issue revolves around each candidate's party's leadership in the House. The election of Matheson is a vote for now Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to return as speaker. A vote for Love is a vote for Speaker John Boehner.

If Democrats regain a majority, Matheson, an admitted fiscal conservative, wouldn't control the agenda of the House — Pelosi would.

Since a vote for Matheson brings the House one vote closer to a Speaker Pelosi, arguably the most liberal and progressive speaker in history, I cannot lend my support to Matheson and encourage like-minded Democrats to vote for Love.
