Roadwork could disrupt some weekend travel plans around the state, from closing part of 700 East and the 5600 West bridge over Interstate 80 in Salt Lake City to closing most northbound lanes on I-15 in North Salt Lake — plus a road widening project that may throw some unwary BYU football fans for a loss.

The Utah Transit Authority is closing 700 East through the weekend between 2100 South and Ashton Avenue (2340 South). That is for construction of a railroad crossing for the new Sugar House streetcar.

Meanwhile, the Utah Department of Transportation will close the 5600 West bridge over I-80 from Friday night through Sunday night for maintenance. On- and off-ramps to I-80 will be open, but traffic will be unable to cross the bridge.

UDOT is also encouraging people traveling to the BYU football game on Saturday to use the 800 North and Orem Center Street exits instead of the University Parkway exit to travel to LaVell Edwards Stadium. University Parkway is reduced to two lanes in each direction from State Street to 800 East in Orem for widening.

UDOT also plans significant lane restrictions on northbound I-15 at mile marker 313 in North Salt Lake on Saturday. One lane will close at 7 p.m., two will close at 10 p.m., and three will close at 11 p.m. through 5 a.m. on Sunday. Crews will be repairing pavement in the area.

Meanwhile, UDOT has some good news, too. The new Mountain View Corridor highway will open Saturday at 3 p.m. between Redwood Road at Porter Rockwell Boulevard (16000 South) in Bluffdale to the Old Bingham Highway (about 10200 South) in West Jordan. A two-mile section of it had opened in June between 12600 South and 13400 South.

UDOT will offer a free community celebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. that will include food and events including a bike ride on the new highway and a kids' costume bike parade. Events will be held the University of Utah Health Care Center parking lot at 5126 W. Daybreak Parkway in South Jordan.
