Prep football: Coin flip to determine top seed in Region 7

Olympus came away with a convincing 27-9 win against Skyline on Friday night, another successful chapter in its Battle for the Rock with its biggest rival.

But interestingly enough, the Titans' reward for the victory might be the same as the consequence of losing: A three-way tie at the top of Region 7 makes playoff seeding anything but clear.

To recap, Olympus was smothered by Herriman, Skyline eeked out a win over the Mustangs and the Titans just marched over the Eagles. Each team is 4-1 in region play, meaning a coin flip Monday will determine how the seeding plays out.

"That's what our region decided a few years ago," Olympus coach Aaron Whitehead said. "There'd be a couple other ways to look at it, but it's hard to say what that is. We don't want to do it by points because Herriman scored a lot on us."

Still, a coin flip handing any given team a chance at the top seed still is better than being left out altogether. Even if Olympus loses the flip, Whitehead still has a nice victory to look back on.

"Our guys really stepped it up," he said. "Of course, we'd love to play another home game, but anyone we're going to play is going to be good either way."

Yet none of the Region 7 teams knows which team it will face because of a similar tie in Region 6. A three-way tie for second — Bountiful, Highland and Woods Cross all at 3-2 — has scrambled that region as well.

There are plenty of other regions that need sorting out, including Region 4: Lone Peak, Bingham and Pleasant Grove are tied at 3-1. Lone Peak is matched up with two-win Lehi, so it would be favored to get a win. Bingham and Pleasant Grove will face each other, taking one team out of the chase.
